How to manage human friendly URLs
The following section will explain both what a human friendly URL is, and how you can manage them using the content builder.
What is a human friendly URL
A human friendly URL is considered to be a version of a URL that is easier for a human to remember. To explain further, it is quite common when browsing the Internet to come across long and quite absurd URLs. For example if you've ever visited a newspapers website and followed the link from one of the news headlines, generally the URL that you're taken to will be quite long and complex, i.e.
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/policy/rich-will-bear-load-of-fuel-excise-change/storyfn59nsif-
1226991561491#. So a human friendly URL is considered to be a URL without the complexity demonstrated above. For example on the new FRRR website an example of a human friendly URL would be 'http://www.frrr.org.au/our_team', which takes the visitor to the following actual webpage
'http://www.frrr.org.au/cb_pages/frrr_staff.php'.
The Alias Manager (Human Friendly URL Manager)
The 'Alias Manager (Human Friendly URL Manager)' can be accessed via the 'Bookmarks' section located on the home page of the content builder, or by visiting the following URL http://www.cecc.com.au/cb/alias_admin.php. Please note that you're required to be logged into the content builder to access the 'Alias Manager'.
To create a new 'Human Friendly URL', follow the steps below:
Navigate to the 'Alias Manager', then click the 'Add Alias' button located along the top of the screen.
- Enter all of the elements of your new human friendly URL. In the 'Alias' field, enter the 'Human Friendly' part of your new URL. Please note that whatever you enter here (i.e. 'grants') is what will appear directly after the FRRR base domain (i.e. 'http://www.frrr.org.au/grants'). The
'Extension' field is optional field. The 'Path' field can be entered as either a 'relative' or 'full' path. An example of both of these paths would be, 'full = http://www.frrr.org.au/cb_pages/frrr_staff.php', and 'relative = cb_pages/frrr_staff.php'. Please note that it is recommended that you use 'relative' paths. Relative paths will make your new human friendly URL have a masking effect, whereas if you use 'full' paths your human friendly URLs will redirect your website visitor to the original webpage URL, rather than mask the original URL within your human friendly URL.
The 'Extension required?' and 'Case sensitive?' fields are both optional fields. - Once you've entered all of your elements for your new human friendly URL, click the 'Insert Alias' button. If you're new human friendly URL is successfully created, it is always recommended that you first test your new alias prior to circulating it. To test a new alias, click on the 'View' option located down the right hand side of the 'Manage Aliases' page.
Please note the human friendly URLs have been used throughout the FRRR website to mask the default managed event links and the default news category links. For example, the original link for a managed event looks like this; 'http://frrr.org.au/cb_pages/event_details.php?mevent_id=1889'. Whereas using this 'Alias Manager' tool content managers' can create a more human friendly version
of this URL; i.e. āhttp://www.frrr.org.au/grants/ANZ-seeds-of-renewalā.
